And we’re off!
I gathered so much inspiration from and for “self”- proclaimed demon driven metal band Enrot with my armature journalist review. The local L.A. music scene is truly rocked with the presence of such a band. Check it out!

I remember, when I was 5 years old, sitting…watching MTV (R.I.P.) and being more than happy to wait for my favorite music video by R.E.M. Time helped me figure out that I actually was able to appreciate a huge variety of music, and long before I fully understood what any of what that meant or how it would shape me as a person.
Some people say “I’ll listen to anything but country music”; and although I cannot personally agree with said statement, I also can’t figure how the hell that genre became so ”uncool”. But I’ve always had a particular genre of no no music: Thrash Metal. I had the entire idea of listening to thrash AND death metal wrapped tightly in my head as a form of musical noise that was mostly tone and rhythm less. Trying to understand the psychological process of hardcore metal heads was once a tad bit mind blowing to me. As I grew older, and dated a fair share of metal heads, I began to wonder why I was so attracted to them… I began to set seemingly personal taste aside and LISTEN with more than my ears.
Now, taking one music class makes no one an expert on music as a whole or even in theory. But as some of us grow, it’s easier to step outside ones comfort zone in order to see and hear different perspectives. A long time friend of mine invited me to his band’s gigs for a few months, and I told him that if the money gods would have it that I’d be there with bells on. That friend, Quentin, is the lead vocalist of groove-orientated thrash metal band Enrot. Of course I sort of shrugged off the actual live music factor, while viewing it all as a fun/ interesting night out with support for the band. So! I put a shit ton of effort into girling myself up, shot the shit around the bar because I was flying solo, and waited for my poor mixture of drinks to kick in.
Enrot took the stage at 10pm, everyone gathered as I anticipated a mediocre enjoyment of the performance….and I was proven wrong so very fast. The band drew me in more and more as their set-list went on, Quentin’s vocals were beyond on point, and it was all made clear: the talent displayed by the other 3 members of the band was a headbangingly awesome surprise as well. Watching the bassist to my right, guitarist to my left and the drummer bang away as if he were conjuring Satan all got a well needed rage-rise out of me. I felt the rhythmic patterns of each instrument, listened to vocal and lyrical flow, not to mention I had no ‘effin clue that Quentin could scream like a pro. The energy on stage set the band apart from most local bands I’ve seen in my mere 10 years of watching live rock music; all 4 members brought some heavy shit while connecting with the crowd on a strong level of skill. Although I lost count of how many songs were in their set, I didn’t want the guys to stop playing…but now have a new found feel and comprehension of why metal has such an impact on certain people and their dire need to be expressive in all the wrong and scary ways.
